"Walking round the 2006 Affordable Art Fair, I was immediately struck by Lilia Mazurkevich's arresting depiction of this sea of 49 faces, jostling and oscillating against one another so that the overall effect is one of dynamically charged motion akin to a tempestuous sea when viewed from afar. Lilia says this reminds her of her first experiences travelling on the Tube, having moved to London from the Ukraine in the late 1990s. When viewed close-up, the work reminded me of the groteschi painted by the Italian Renaissance and Mannerist masters that frequently adorn architectural capriccios. The physiognomies also recall those of the bawdy peasants that feature so prominent in many Dutch tavern scenes of the seventeenth century.

As primarily a collector of Old Master paintings, I am not your typical New British Artist customer. However, I immediately felt an affinity towards the painting, and this became stronger when I got chatting to Kay Austin from NBA and learned more about the painting and what NBA was doing to promote talent such as Lilia's. Kay suggested we move the painting to my house, and hang it in situ. This was an excellent idea, and after a day or so of living with the work of art, I took the plunge and bought my first piece of contemporary art! I haven't regretted it since."

I was initially alerted to the site via an article in the national press and I can see that the site has come on leaps and bounds in terms of ease and speed of navigation - both crucial requirements when purchasing a product/service over the internet. It is also good to see the variety of content and numbers of artists increasing at the same time.

I very rarely visit art galleries or purchase art except whilst on holiday, and when I do it is usually abroad as I find art tends to be overpriced (overvalued) in the UK. Your site has been successful in introducing me to artists and their works which would otherwise have remained undiscovered. As an amateur, I purchase art on the basis of its content rather than as a commodity and price is obviously always a criterion. Because I am not an expert and also a relative newcomer to art purchasing I am never sure as the value of a particular piece, but in this respect I have been happy with the prices I have paid.
