About the artist
As a musician as well as an artist, I am aware of the correspondences and contradictions that exist between music and painting. My work is inspired by the freedoms possible in both, and the colours and forms of music frequently inform my work. Using images based on still life and landscape, I respond subconsciously to moods linked to my experiences. I believe that one must be sensitive to the often subtle emotions and insights derived from the visual patterns and colours observed, and this applies equally to the interpretation of music. I refer to the words of Kandinksky, "Painting cannot be explained, one can only help towards its understanding." Abstract relationships between line and colour play a part in every painting. The start of my paintings is nearly always figurative, but in the process becomes more abstract as line and colour dominate. I start without knowing what the finished result will be, a mysterious journey, the destination unknown until the work is finished."nn
About the artist
"My work is mainly still lifes of objects which are related to each other. The objects are represented, as they would be found in real life, in an evidence-like style. In my paintings they are like small, lifeless witnesses of what has been or has happened. The objects I tend to select are participants in the action. nnMy work is categorised by a very academic technical style. The composition of the work, the chosen colours, the positioning of an object at the very centre of the canvas and the very clean background give the chosen object a real sense of importance. nnThe focus in my painting is only on one point of the canvas, leaving the rest of the composition blurred. An important part of my work is the observation of these objects in space through the lens of the camera, which tends to mimic the human eye. I am attempting to achieve the same result in my painting, nnI think that objects can talk about life. By including some personal items you can create a narrative about the person who was in the scene; you can guess what he/she was doing, and something about their personality.nnMy new work concentrates on nature and the simple sensuality of plants and fruits."nn
About the artist
“My skies are a study of vast natural transience, showing the immense diversity in cloud formation, colour and texture that can occur over one single skyline. nnI am influenced by Impressionism and its depiction of nature, but the immediacy of photography gives my work a more contemporary form. The narrow field of vision and use of light, focus and contrast in the current series of work emulates digital photography and allows me to place absolute emphasis on the sky itself when I feel its ever-changing beauty surpasses that of the stationary world beneath.nnIn my new 'Lamp-life' works I aim to express the eerie beauty of suburban night scenes lit by the glow of sodium street-lamps. Using coloured chalks and charcoal I capture these apparently ordinary suburban landscapes at the bizarre moment at which nature and artificiality converge, to produce the very distinct atmosphere of a suburban night. I think of these drawings as 'light-portraits' as, although I do not show the direct source of the glow, each image is structured around the semi-visible presence of the lamp itself."

This also avoids too literal a representation of water and allows the viewer space within the image".
About the artist
"Our perception of the visual world suggests that it is full of ambiguities. Within ourselves and from one to another, descriptions of what we see create a rich variety of interpretations of both the meaning and content of a visual experience. If we overlay this experience with imagination, the potential for creative interpretation is vast.nMy interest, through the medium of drawing, painting and photography, is to communicate a personal reaction to the visual world which invites the viewer to accept, alter or complete the apparent narrative. As the producer of the work I have no monopoly over its meaning. By creative use of a visual language I hope to suggest a range of possibilities."

I think of these drawings as 'light-portraits' as, although I do not show the direct source of the glow, each image is structured around the semi-visible presence of the lamp itself."
About the artist
“My previous career with British Airways involved a great deal of travel. This enabled me to explore new environments prompting a wish to interact with foreign communities. In my paintings the memories and emotions experienced are absorbed and translated into abstract form. Images are implied rather than explicit; their abstraction evokes the figurative, allowing a hint of the familiar to become recognisable.nnNature is fundamental to my painting. From landscape and animal behaviour to the purity of a tree’s form, revealing a repetition of colour and shape. Rather than illustrating nature I make paintings that emerge with natural characteristics.nnThe technique I use involves applying several layers of paint which is then superimposed with many thousands of individual dots of colour. These interact with the pattern below, following and overlapping the contours, tracing memories that capture a history and echoing the mark of a fingerprint, a unique identity. The subconscious flow of form clears the mind, generating a wide diversity of emotions echoed in the broad spectrum of colour.nnI employ a multi-panel technique. I paint several panels at one time. Each panel is a stand-alone work in itself, however multiple panels can be hung together to form a new larger artwork. In addition the panels can be rotated to hang vertically or horizontally - the choice is yours."
About the artist
“I have returned to art after a period of career building and family care. Texture and colour are the most important concerns in my artwork. Working back through the layers of paint, degrading what was originally applied, lends an air of history to my work. Rather like peeling back layers of wallpaper to reveal the presence of previous occupants, working back into the canvas reconnects my thoughts to the original memories that inspire the work.n nIt is tempting to overwork a canvas. However, recent paintings have become more abstract and pared down. They are largely inspired by my travels; an attempt to distill disparate cultures and landscapes into simple compositions which capture the energy, colour and vibrancy of local society, art and architecture. The application of metal leaf to the canvas give the works a air of opulence, reinforcing the beauty to be found in art and nature.
About the artist
About the artistnLi Chevalier is one of the emerging contemporary Chinese artists working at the crossroad of West and East. Li has staged more than 35 solo and group exhibitions across Europe, the Middle East and the Far East during the last 10 years. Her works have been shortlisted by some major French Art Salons including the Salon of the prestigious French National Fine Arts Society. Her work has been exhibited at the new gallery of the Louvre Museum in Paris and is among the shortlisted artists for the Celeste Art Prize and the Mercury Prize.nnLi's artistic roots originate from her Chinese heritage but also draw upon her exploration of European culture. She works in ink and wash on canvas, successfully uniting Chinese and European aesthetics. In empathy with the spirit of the Experimental Ink and Wash movement, a new Chinese art form, Li's works are focused on preserving the force of the traditional medium of Chinese ink. Through her use of ink, she creates a rhythmic balance between brightness and darkness; density and lightness; texture and shade. The brush strokes give her paintings rhythm and beauty depicting the outward and inner qualities of the subject.
About the artist
"My paintings are concerned with erosion. Memory and our ability to recall thoughts from the past enrich and inform our existence. Our recollections, although vivid, can also be inaccurate. Time will erode both one's memory and the place remembered.nMy subject is usually found where erosion has a strong effect. I often use photography as a departure point and in subsequent drawings and preliminary paintings begin to explore my emotions and remembrances of the place, which I try to encapsulate in the final painting.nExploiting the effects of paint and the visual interplay between abstraction and realism forms the core to my work. Recycled canvases also play their part. Re-priming over the top of an existing work leaves marks and shapes which will take up paint and can often be incorporated into the new work. Capitalising on these 'accidents' often alters the thrust of a piece and moves it in an unexpected direction. Mud, sand and detritus from the physical landscape can also find their way into the work and contribute to surface texture".
“Inspired from an early age by the masters of Impressionism I have developed a style of painting that allows me to express my subject without oppressing the viewer. The reaction of the public to my work is crucial to me as I am intrigued about the individual’s response and this then informs and evolves my style of abstraction.nnThe majority of my paintings are landscape inspired. I work from either my photographic records or from memory, applying layers of colour to express objects, movement and light. My method is very time consuming and it takes many months to complete a painting because of the multiple layers of oil paint applied to each work. Titles are also very important particularly when abstracting work; the title can be the only thing that links the artist to the viewer and my titles only hint at the subject matter of the painting, giving the viewer the freedom to come to their own understanding.”
About the artist
"Scotland has been a constant focus of interest to me and I have researched numerous areas around its coastline. The areas are so changeable in their moods and its unlimited source of subject matter will always lure me to return. I have tried to reflect the remoteness of the coastal areas but also the endearing quality of tranquillity. nWhen painting my landscape views I have found a more simplified approach to treating the subject matter looking at the broad areas of colour which represent the changing mood of the scenery. The introduction of materials also within my painting has given me a new vigour towards the work. I am beginning to focus on the relationship of how colour mood and movement all combine to encapsulate an atmospheric effect.nnRather than translating a view pictorially I am keen to represent the relationship between the land and the sea. I am looking more closely at the rhythms of the sea and its influences on the coast and shoreline. Smaller close up views can be rendered in a larger scale and I am fascinated by how nature can continually change and affect the landscape.nnLast year I was fortunate enough to travel to China and have found a new source of inspiration. I am currently working on views where I recorded images of carp found in ponds situated in the grounds of Chinese temples and public gardens. Initially I was drawn into the colour and movement of the fish similar to the way I have been treating my coastal landscape themes. During my research of the significance of carp within Chinese culture I have discovered the importance held by Chinese to different living species.nnThe treatment of my Chinese paintings is different in that I am looking more closely at the figurative aspects of the fish. However I am still incorporating the previous techniques applied to create movement and atmosphere within the painting. I am also reflecting the significance of themes which are associated with Chinese culture. The carp is a symbol of hard work where people can change their circumstances through endeavour. It is a strong visual analogy with the fish swimming in large numbers throughout the pond. The colour and movement are visually stimulating to me and I am developing similar themes within my work. nnIt is my hope that the spectator can experience the same moods and feelings that I endeavour to capture when I translate the subject matter I paint. It is very rewarding for me to hear that people who have purchased my work find something different to see within my paintings every day."n
About the artist
"Water is a universal element we all share and a pool can be a space for reflection, relaxation, ritual, competition and transformation. Current work aims to explore the versatility of this subject and the versatility of paint.nnIn my paintings the use of flat backgrounds for water emphasises the form of the swimmer and how it is broken up into a series of abstract marks. This also avoids too literal a representation of water and allows the viewer space within the image".
About the artist
Christopher Wynford Etherington Johnson studied at the Chelsea School of Art in the early 1970’s. He is a psychologist and specialises in the field of Energy Psychology and past life regression. nnAlthough he has always kept his hand in over the years with water colour work and drawing, he felt a compulsion to return to oils in his newly inspired artistic endeavour. Paul Cezanne's work and approach were always a fascination in the past with Chris and he has adopted Cezanne's methodology if not his style. Fundamental concepts that Cezanne attempted to portray and explore were the use of colour, the use of 'space' on the canvas, the principle of implied movement, the generation of an emotional or sensory awareness, and the stimulation of the viewer's sense of time being in captured. nnAlthough Chris's paintings could be regarded superficially as landscapes each canvas also hints at an untold story - a psychological drama.

 Dimensions: 80x80cm/32x32ins

“My work is inspired by organic structures, detail, fragility and pattern, through which I look at themes such as memory and identity. My working method involves the organisation of many small pieces into a complex but delicate entirety.nnThe artwork spreads across an expanse of clear resin encapsulating drawings and personal statements that define us. The work aims to connect with the viewer by being striking from a distance but intricately detailed on closer examination, revealing the daily highs and lows of life. We become aware of the text only when close to the surfaces; the artwork is revealing to us a secret...viewers often recognise aspects of themselves in the work".nn

I extract the rhythm of the scene, allowing the viewer to engage with and expose the geographies we inhabit within contemporary existence and experience the frantic turbulence of city life.nnThe images are visually powerful photoholographic realities, where gravity is not always visible and architecture can appear impossible, building a new space which has become submerged in everyday presence.nnALL IMAGES LIMITED EDITIONS OF 10 - PLEASE CHECK FOR AVAILABILITY
