Emma Hill

From the artist

“My previous career with British Airways involved a great deal of travel. This enabled me to explore new environments prompting a wish to interact with foreign communities. In my paintings the memories and emotions experienced are absorbed and translated into abstract form. Images are implied rather than explicit; their abstraction evokes the figurative, allowing a hint of the familiar to become recognisable."

artist's biography

Biography

“My previous career with British Airways involved a great deal of travel. This enabled me to explore new environments prompting a wish to interact with foreign communities. In my paintings the memories and emotions experienced are absorbed and translated into abstract form. Images are implied rather than explicit; their abstraction evokes the figurative, allowing a hint of the familiar to become recognisable.

Nature is fundamental to my painting. From landscape and animal behaviour to the purity of a tree’s form, revealing a repetition of colour and shape. Rather than illustrating nature I make paintings that emerge with natural characteristics.

The technique I use involves applying several layers of paint which is then superimposed with many thousands of individual dots of colour. These interact with the pattern below, following and overlapping the contours, tracing memories that capture a history and echoing the mark of a fingerprint, a unique identity. The subconscious flow of form clears the mind, generating a wide diversity of emotions echoed in the broad spectrum of colour.

I employ a multi-panel technique. I paint several panels at one time. Each panel is a stand-alone work in itself, however multiple panels can be hung together to form a new larger artwork. In addition the panels can be rotated to hang vertically or horizontally - the choice is yours."
