artist's biography
“Eight years of extensive travel in my career inspired a series of large abstract paintings which drew inspiration from the diverse landscapes and cultures I encountered. These paintings referenced nature and the elements and concentrated on stylistic representations of the beauty around us, using earthy tones.
My artwork is labour intensive. The technique I use involves applying several layers of paint which is then superimposed with many, many thousands of individual dots of colour. These interact with the pattern below, following and overlapping the contours, giving a unique texture to the finished composition. This layering technique is further complicated because I often link one canvas to the next, so that whilst each painting stands alone they can also be hung together to form a storyboard.
I find the act of painting clears the mind and accesses the subconscious, generating a wide diversity of emotions echoed in the broad spectrum of colour. Now at home with my young children I have found that their innocence, hyperactivity, love of bright colour and intense examination of minutiae of everyday life have refreshed my view and freed my imagination. Poetry, film and music, especially pop songs form the ‘psychodelic’ era, play a part in the inspiration for my new works. These paintings are deliberately quirky, naive and fun. They relate to everyone's inner self, an escape from the everyday into an imaginary world of whimsy, colour and make believe. A refuge from the cares of the world."
