Neil Pittaway

From the artist

'My work is a celebration of our cultural heritage interwoven with the present and is influenced by the legacy of Britain's imperial past and Euro-centric culture. I concentrate on the relationship of Britain to Empire, placing it in a contemporary context, relating historical sources in the city to the wider world. In and around the architecture of central London one cannot escape from Britain's imperial past. It is all around, preserved as if the empire still exists. It is this need for preservation that has continued to overshadow contemporary Britain. It is this aspect that motivates my ideas and theory within my current work."

Biography

'My work is a celebration of our cultural heritage interwoven with the present and is influenced by the legacy of Britain's imperial past and Euro-centric culture. I concentrate on the relationship of Britain to Empire, placing it in a contemporary context, relating historical sources in the city to the wider world. In and around the architecture of central London one cannot escape from Britain's imperial past. It is all around, preserved as if the empire still exists. It is this need for preservation that has continued to overshadow contemporary Britain. It is this aspect that motivates my ideas and theory within my current work.

My work is contempoary but uses historical sources. These have been generated from my interest in the city, specifically looking at the colonial and imperial architecture of central London as well as the collections of the major museums and galleries. My reseach uses a variety of sources including works of art from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. I have used and adapted these into contemporary issues that are relevant to British society today. I am interested in relating present modernity in Anglo and European culture to its historical and cultural past. I bring the past to life by introducing material elements of modern culture as well as using architecture, public monuments and transcriptions of artist's works from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.'
