Mick Dean
From the artist
"My paintings are concerned with erosion. Memory and our ability to recall thoughts from the past enrich and inform our existence. Our recollections, although vivid, can also be inaccurate. Time will erode both one's memory and the place remembered."

artist's biography
"My paintings are concerned with erosion. Memory and our ability to recall thoughts from the past enrich and inform our existence. Our recollections, although vivid, can also be inaccurate. Time will erode both one's memory and the place remembered.
My subject is usually found where erosion has a strong effect. I often use photography as a departure point and in subsequent drawings and preliminary paintings begin to explore my emotions and remembrances of the place, which I try to encapsulate in the final painting.
Exploiting the effects of paint and the visual interplay between abstraction and realism forms the core to my work. Recycled canvases also play their part. Re-priming over the top of an existing work leaves marks and shapes which will take up paint and can often be incorporated into the new work. Capitalising on these 'accidents' often alters the thrust of a piece and moves it in an unexpected direction. Mud, sand and detritus from the physical landscape can also find their way into the work and contribute to surface texture".
