Lizzie Hale
From the artist
As a musician as well as an artist, I am aware of the correspondences and contradictions that exist between music and painting. My work is inspired by the freedoms possible in both, and the colours and forms of music frequently inform my work. Using images based on still life and landscape, I respond subconsciously to moods linked to my experiences. I believe that one must be sensitive to the often subtle emotions and insights derived from the visual patterns and colours observed, and this applies equally to the interpretation of music. I refer to the words of Kandinksky, "Painting cannot be explained, one can only help towards its understanding." Abstract relationships between line and colour play a part in every painting. The start of my paintings is nearly always figurative, but in the process becomes more abstract as line and colour dominate. I start without knowing what the finished result will be, a mysterious journey, the destination unknown until the work is finished."

Originally I had to make a choice between music or art as a career. In music it is vital to establish a firm grounding at a young age, so I accepted my place at the Royal College of Music where I studied the flute and the piano. My subsequent career in music consisted of playing the flute in various orchestras and ensembles, and teaching both in schools and privately at home. At the same time I continued to paint and draw on a part-time basis. Now my family are grown up I can dedicate more time to my artwork.
