Stephen Wassall
From the artist
“I am a self-taught artist and have obsessively drawn images from a young age. These images took the place of the written word in my diary and I thought, at that time, that they would obscure my emotions from prying eyes. I create images that often depict people, love, paranoia, agoraphobia, obsessiveness, friendship; the complex psychological drives of human nature of which we may often be unaware - or a times only too aware. It was only later that I realised that I had in fact intuited the truth that, for me, images depict such abstract concepts more satisfactorily than words."

I create images that often depict people, love, paranoia, agoraphobia, obsessiveness, friendship; the complex psychological drives of human nature of which we may often be unaware - or a times only too aware. Pyrography is the art of burning into a natural surface, using one temperature or variable temperature wood burning tools or by using a naked flame. The control of the depth and thickness of the burned line determine the tonal depths. A brilliant range of natural tones from black brown and chocolate shades to sepia are achievable. Preparing the surface of the wood and the particular wood chosen are of huge importance influencing the quality of the image. As no two pieces of wood are the same so the challenges in creating Fine Art Pyrograph are infinite, but precision, patience and a delicate/robust hand are always necessary.
The discovery of pyrography was a revelation that satisfied my desire for an unusual method of enhancing my imagery which had otherwise been confined to paper. I like the intensity of the whole process, the rawness of the wood, the barbaric act of setting fire to such a natural, beautiful material, counterweighed by human control, skill and imagination.”
