“I have returned to art after a period of career building and family care. Texture and colour are the most important concerns in my artwork. Working back through the layers of paint, degrading what was originally applied, lends an air of history to my work. Rather like peeling back layers of wallpaper to reveal the presence of previous occupants, working back into the canvas reconnects my thoughts to the original memories that inspire the work.
It is tempting to overwork a canvas. However, recent paintings have become more abstract and pared down. They are largely inspired by my travels; an attempt to distill disparate cultures and landscapes into simple compositions which capture the energy, colour and vibrancy of local society, art and architecture. The application of metal leaf to the canvas give the works an air of opulence, reinforcing the beauty to be found in art and nature.
