artist's biography
“My skies are a study of vast natural transience, showing the immense diversity in cloud formation, colour and texture that can occur over one single skyline.
I am influenced by Impressionism and its depiction of nature, but the immediacy of photography gives my work a more contemporary form. The narrow field of vision and use of light, focus and contrast in the current series of work emulates digital photography and allows me to place absolute emphasis on the sky itself when I feel its ever-changing beauty surpasses that of the stationary world beneath.
In my new 'Lamp-life' works I aim to express the eerie beauty of suburban night scenes lit by the glow of sodium street-lamps. Using coloured chalks and charcoal I capture these apparently ordinary suburban landscapes at the bizarre moment at which nature and artificiality converge, to produce the very distinct atmosphere of a suburban night. I think of these drawings as 'light-portraits' as, although I do not show the direct source of the glow, each image is structured around the semi-visible presence of the lamp itself."
